Casey & Mortimer

“We have never had the opportunity to have full family photos done, with both Casey and Mortimer included. Between the toddler, dog and cat, it can be near-impossible to try to snap something of us all in one frame by myself and life has always seem to go too fast. Photos mean so much to me, our home is covered in them and capturing and savouring precious family memories, but yet not to have any photos of all 5 of us feels like absolutely something is missing. Of course, as new Mothers, we find ourselves behind the camera much more than in front of it!”

How did you pick their names?
“Mortimer is based off the book called ‘Mortimer’ by Robert Munsch. The funny part is that in the book, Mortimer is this little boy that is very loud and always told to be quiet, but when we got him they said they hadn’t heard his meow. So we thought we picked an ironic name. But then, we brought him home he started to meow a lot and he hasn’t shut up since!” Emily laughed, “He’s a very vocal boy, so the name ended up really suiting him.”

Victoria added, “And Casey was my family dog. My parents got him when my childhood Golden passed away and I was in NYC getting my masters. I picked his name from a list of names, and I liked the way ‘Casey’ was spelled, because I had only seen it spelled differently, like ‘Kacie’. He had a green collar as a puppy, so I’d call him Casey Green.”

What’s some of their funny habits or quirks?
“Casey is an atypical Golden. He doesn’t care to please or interact with other dogs at all. He knows how to socialize with people, he loves people, but couldn’t care less about other dogs. He’s also not a people-pleaser. He’s very loving and loyal, but he still does what he wants. He also LOVES his ball to the point of obsession. And, recently, we noticed he loves watching bath bombs dissipate. He’ll just stand there fixated on them until they’re gone.”

“Mortimer really LOVES butter. We’re not sure why, but if we open the container he’ll usually come running. He also loves being brushed on his stomache. And we think he has a facade of being super independent, but on the inside he’s a mush-ball who loves his mamas.”

What’s one of your favourite memories with them?
Victoria explained, “I’m a big swimmer and a couple years ago before the lockdown the water park had a ‘Dog Day’. It was the best day! We got to swim in the wave pool and went in the lazy river, which was funny because he kept trying to swim upstream. He loves the cottage as well, he thinks it was made for him. He’ll spend all day jumping off the dock and playing.”

“And for Mortimer, there was this funny moment before Leora was born when we wanted to test our baby skills and so we strapped him into this baby carrier and he LOVED it. We were shocked! He just relaxed right into it and looked around. And speaking of Leora, he’s really good with her. I mean, we knew Casey would be but Mortimer isn’t usually interested in much, but he took to her right away. He loved all of her baby stuff and is so gentle with her. He’ll let her hold him in a way he won’t let anyone else.”
