The Cat Room

Ben and I celebrated the new year by moving into a townhouse!

We’re loving it so far. We still have some bare walls to fill and a few more things to buy, but overall we’ve settled in pretty quickly.

I spent some time last week capturing our new place and the cats in it. I ended up with so many good photos that I’m going to break them up into sections.

This is Part 1 and it’s focused on our spare bedroom that we turned into The Cat Room! We wanted them to have their own space and they’re basically our children, so we set this up for them. It’s working out well and they seem really happy :)

About the cats:
Rica:
6 years old / white and grey. We found her in a park at 8 weeks. She was very scared for the first year living with us, but has gotten braver and braver over time. She’s still the first one to run away though.

Besides being a scaredy-cat, she’s the perfect pet. Such a sweetheart, listens right away, and is super cute. We really had a hard time deciding if we wanted to adopt another cat. We didn’t want to risk getting a troublemaker and ruining our lovely, quiet family.

In the end we couldn’t resist expanding our furfamily, especially when we saw Winnie’s little face.

Winnie: 5 years old / black. We adopted her from Fur-ever Homes. She was really well socialized by the time we adopted her at 9 weeks, so she’s the bravest cat we have. Not even the vacuum scares her.

Rica and Winnie get along but they never truly bonded. Adding her to the family definitely didn’t ruin anything - it only made us better.

And then there’s Ted.

Sweet, sweet, loving, moody, territorial Ted.

Ted: 4 years old / orange. He’s the best and the worst. On one hand, he’s extremely loving, loyal and affectionate. On the other, he doesn’t get along with other animals because he wants all the attention. He’s the hardest to train. And he’s had litter box issues that we, thankfully, helped him overcome.

I’m not sure where his mood swings came from. We picked him up from a family in Hamilton when he was 10 weeks old. All I know is that they put him online because they already had a cat and a baby and they couldn’t take care of him. Weirdly, I never asked where they got him in the first place.

Even with his flaws, I’ll never stop loving him. Turns out our lovely, quiet family couldn’t be ruined by a troublemaker. We adjusted. Now we’re a lovely, not-as-quiet family.

We got the cats a new tower for Christmas. We put it by the window so they can look over the whole neighborhood. On warm days we open the window and they all run over to sniff the air. It has a bunch of hanging balls they can swat, areas they can scratch, and 3 beds for 3 cats. It even came with a water bowl that they drink from all the time.

The Cat Room is furnished with a daybed so we have a comfy place to hang with them. A giant poof sits to the left. We put 2 litter boxes at opposite sides of the room to make separate territories. There’s a 3rd box in the basement.

Ted was peeing on the floor in the old place, a habit that started out of nowhere and completely frustrated us. I wrote a BLOG about how we helped him overcome his issues you can read here. So far he hasn’t had any accidents in the new place!

We also put a few scratch pads on the floor, along with places to hide, food bowls for each kitty, water dishes, toys, and all their supplies.

Ted is definitely the star of this shoot. He follows me around like a dog. It sucks he’s an asshole to the other cats because I know he can be such a sweetheart.

We still have some more cat room goals, like getting cat shelves and climbing posts put on the wall. And I’m going to print off some of these photos and hang them. I’m also currently growing cat grass that I can’t wait to share with them.

I’ll be posting Part 2 soon! Subscribe to my mailing list to get notified when I post a new BLOG.

What do you think about our new place so far? Do you have a cat/pet room? Let me know in the comments!
